History and Heritage

Laudale’s story stretches back centuries, shaped by the people, traditions and landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. Founded in the 18th century by John Campbell of Ardslignish, the estate has long stood as a place of enduring significance on the shores of Loch Sunart. Today, following a meticulous restoration, Laudale combines its historic character with modern refinement, offering guests the rare chance to step into a living chapter of Scotland’s past while enjoying the height of contemporary luxury.

A Highland Legacy

Laudale was built between 1755 and 1790 by John Campbell of Ardslignish, from a family whose influence ran deep across the West Highlands. For centuries, the estate has been woven into the rhythms of Highland life, from agriculture and fishing to clan gatherings along the shores of Loch Sunart. The name “Sunart” is widely traced to Old Norse, “Svein’s fjord,” a reminder of the region’s long history of settlement. Today, the estate stands as a living testament to that legacy, its historic roots carefully preserved.

An Era of Estates

Laudale’s creation reflected a wider movement in 18th-century Scotland, when landowners began to build grand houses along the lochs. These estates became symbols of both status and stewardship, centres of agriculture, fishing and local industry, while their lochside settings connected them to the vital sea routes of the west coast. During this “age of improvement,” Laudale emerged as both a family seat and a Highland landmark, a role it continues to embody today.
